Be Careful What You Rehearse

That moment you keep replaying…the one where your loved one resisted your care and it left you feeling helpless?

It might not have happened exactly the way you remember it.

Decades of research show that memory isn’t like a video recording.
It’s a story your brain reconstructs every time you recall it.
And that story is shaped by your current emotionspast experiences, and what you expected to happen.

In other words, your mood today can reshape how you remember yesterday.

There’s even a term for this: memory reconsolidation.
Every time you recall a memory, it becomes changeable. Your brain might unknowingly fill in blanks, add meaning, or reinforce a more painful version of the event, especially when guilt, stress, or burnout are present.

This is why it matters what memories we dwell on.
The thoughts we practice become stronger, and not all of them are helpful.
Some might not even be true.

And if you’re curious about what psychology and neuroscience tell us about how our brains shape memory, emotion, and caregiving, let me know. I’d love to share more.

💌 From The Inbox

This week’s question comes from Carmen, who asks:

Q: Why do I feel guilty about me time? 😔

A: This is a common feeling many Careblazers struggle with. The feeling of guilt comes from the thought that “me time” is bad, selfish, or somehow causes harm to your loved one with dementia.

The good news is we can change all this. It’s pretty simple, and I explain it all in the private video below.

📺 Video of the Week

This week’s YouTube video is all about a super simple and creative way she got her mom to take her medications WITHOUT convincing her mom, calling them vitamins, or hiding them in her food.

Sometimes the best way to get our loved ones with dementia to do something is to find the most natural, dignified way. It’s all explained in this week’s YouTube video.
