People with dementia will need with many things throughout the course of their diagnosis.
The amount of help they need will continue to grow with time as their condition progresses.
Many people with dementia may not understand they need the help, or, they may not want the help.
This means that sometimes, they might resist your attempts to give them the help they need.
Whenever possible, help the person with dementia without “highlighting” their need for help.
To help you come up with ways to do this, ask yourself the following questions?
· How can you give the help without them knowing?
· How can you help them without calling attention to the help?
· How might you change the environment to make it easier for them, without letting them know you are changing it to make it easier for them?
This week’s video takes a closer look at something many caregivers notice long before they have words for it… the way dementia changes how a person sees the world.
Even with a normal eye exam, your loved one may struggle with depth perception, color contrast, motion, and recognizing what they’re looking at. In this video, I walk you through the most common vision changes in dementia, why they happen, and simple adjustments that can make daily life feel safer and less confusing.
